Wow! I have 3 teenage daughters and I create opportunities for them constantly: internships, ways to raise their GPA's easily, create fundraiser's to help their school, get them private coaches, etc., etc...and they don't even say thank you! I appreciated the crap out of my Dad when he got me an intership! They're even rude about it!
I think we push our kids so much they lose their ability to have time to dream and be creative and come up with their own ways to be self-starting successful people. For all you MOMS out there, I feel your pain and you are not alone!

Like many readers, or perhaps more accurately, like many readers with children, I read with great interest Mark Mitchell’s piece on “ Cultivating Gratitude .” As the father of three children I have long made such cultivation a central concern, but must confess only middling success in the endeavor.
"think of all the fat stupid dads on TV of which Homer Simpson is the archetype"

TV pop culture does not equal culture. If this bothers you, the biggest step you can take is to get rid of your TV and replace it with better things.

Wait til D.W. reads this!
Alright, I don't know where you get these people, Caleb, but you're going to have to stop it. I've got tears in my eyes and I'm going to have to re-read this later...he got me with the brain surgery, then with his parents. You see, I got up at 4 AM (still do, though retired)!
This guy's not only brilliant, he's gotta soul, and that counts for more than brains.
Re: parental discipline, my girls never sassed me but when the old man wasn't around, particularly during their teen years, they'd sass Mom. I had a very heavy, thick gold wedding band and just to keep the girls honest and alert I used to, on occasion, knock them on the head with that ring for no reason. Inevitably I'd get a "why you do that," and I'd tell 'em just in case I missed one! The girls turned out fine, six grandbabies!
I'll be needing a story from Ms. Dalton soon! One word on this essay's printing, MAKE IT LARGER!

My only recent experience with young people is that I managed an engineering lab a few years ago where we hired engineering students from the local university to work part time for us. To their credit, I found them not only to be intelligent and good workers, they demonstrated lots of initiative on the job. They did not seem to have any kind of entitlement complex or think the world owed them anything at all. If anything, they seemed to understand intuitively that anything they get out of the world around them, they would have to buck up and make it happen themselves. Now, these kids were engineering students and, quite possibly, represent selection bias by virtue of that. Nonetheless, I had a very favorable attitude towards these kids.

I think the kids are alright.
