Love this post, love the image you've used and wonder where it came from. I want to use it to illustrate another perspective on freedom.

Wow, thank you for saying what I've been trying to verbalize for a long time. What an interesting paradox, though it has been well-documented, that freedom requires restrictions.

If your job requires you to have constant internet access (for instance, to check your e-mail), another option out there is a Firefox plugin called LeechBlock, which lets you block the sites you spend the most time on, or limit them to a certain amount of time per day, or certain periods of the day. Sadly, I may have to add FPR to my list soon.

Dropping our internet service at home has made for a huge improvement in our family life, but it has also created the problem that the internet access at work must be used for shopping, personal communication, etc. Then again, I was already using it for those things. It is almost as if I need two offices: one that has internet access, and one that does not.

Susan....Just amazing! What will "they" think of next?

Even us "oldsters" have become more and more "addicted" to the internet. Here I sit, on a beautiful day, reading blogs instead of being outdoors!

See you later! I've got do some weeding in the garden! :)

Ah, the irony. I read this article in its entirety because I had hit an obstacle at work, and wanted to put off finding a solution. So I jumped into Google Reader and checked the latest headlines.

Freedom, the software is a useful tool. It's useful in the way that some dim bulbs seem to think poverty is useful: necessity produces a certain degree of virtue (thrift, for example, or the "common spirit" of the Depression). Freedom, however, lets you have your luxury and eat it productively. Or something like that.

I'm going to quote this just because I can: "Computers displace us. They displace us physically - they enable us to talk to anyone, anywhere, and so forth - but they also displace us emotionally and intellectually."

A technical note: programs like Freedom have existed for some time.
