Richard M. Gamble is Professor of History at Hillsdale College and holds the Anna Margaret Ross
Alexander Chair in History and Politics. His most recent book is A Fiery Gospel: The Battle Hymn of
the Republic and the Road to Righteous War (Cornell, 2019).
