Peggy Noonan on the End of Affluence

5

Peggy Noonan has a piece in the WSJ titled “Goodby Bland Affluence.”

Seems even NYC is slowing down and, for the first time in its long history, being forced to consider its own reason for existence.  Hmmm.

  1. Penury chic…how charming. Only a 24 hour hyper-connected New Yawkuh would conjure an idea like being broke and living hard is a political statement.

It’s 7 am, the mosh pit smells of piss and that reveler you thought sexy at the peak bewitching hour of 2 am looks a little washed out. They should hope it’s “Walker Percy again”…because the reality of it, a return to the 70’s is a return to the horrific. It was menacing and grafting that bit of local paranoia on top of a prevailing fear of terrorists will create something that would make Edgar Allen Poe flee in alarm. The 70’s were real ‘authentic”….authentically depraved. The Skells were winning. Brooklyn, that hipster multi-cultural playground was apocalyptic.

Ms. Noonan always strikes me as someone who thinks themselves one of the Gods on Olympus, staring down with alternating doses of imperiousness, romantic nostalgia and faint disgust at what the mere mortals are doing and then banging out some kind of benediction on how everything will be ducky . Close but no cigar…a perfect Reagan Outlook. Scribbler for the State. She has style, of this all can agree but I don’t think she has a simple clue how close utter degradation is.

Give the entitled another Boom and it will be but a fortnight before they’re eating Beluga out of gold slippers and talking about how they got into Graydon Carter’s clubby little Swells Fraternity restaurant that will not take reservations. Penury Chic……..wow.

  2. The return to traditional (rigid, judgmental) religion is not happening, even here in flyover country. However, our UU congregation is growing by leaps and bounds, attracted by a commitment to community, justice for all, and green politics.

And so much of this new celebration of core values is stuff that my earthy birthy friends and I have been doing for years.

  3. More Peggy, this time on the torture memos:

“It’s hard for me to look at a great nation issuing these documents and sending them out to the world and thinking, ‘Oh, much good will come of that.’ Sometimes in life you want to keep walking… Some of life has to be mysterious.”

Reading her is like someone scratching a chaulk board.
