Claremont, CA. When she is six months pregnant with their baby, Verona and her boyfriend Burt almost move to Montreal – because a couple they knew in college lives there. That’s after they almost move to Phoenix (because her former coworker lives there), to Tucson (because her sister lives there), and to Madison (because his cousin lives there). And that’s before they get called to Miami (because his brother’s wife has taken off).

Away We Go” – the new movie co-written by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, directed by Sam Mendes, and starring John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph – is a powerful story of American placelessness, the story of a thirtysomething couple who are trying to put down roots when every connection they have has been uprooted, who are trying to settle down when everyone they know is unsettled.

Or, in my husband’s words: “This is the perfect story for our demographic.”

(Warning: I am going to spoil the ending of this “perfect story for our demographic” below, so beware. Another warning, while I’m doing warnings: If you’re planning to see this movie, plan to encounter some of the most poignant cursing you have ever heard.)

When the movie begins, Verona and Burt are living near his parents, mostly because they want to raise their child near family. (Her parents have been dead for a number of years.) But halfway into her pregnancy, his parents announce that they are finally going to live their dream – by moving to Belgium. They’ve rented out their house and won’t be back for two years, and aren’t Verona and Burt happy for them?  Burt’s parents are oblivious to the fact that in living their own dream, they’re abandoning their soon-to-be-born grandchild. Or they’re not oblivious, and they don’t really care.

Either way, Verona and Burt decide that they need to find some place to live where they know someone. And thus begins their trek across North America.

It is a hilarious trek and a hilarious movie, which it has to be because the storyline is really so sad.

Everywhere they go, Burt and Verona find families in some kind of disrepair, with a relationship to place that is tenuous at best. Everyone in the film has moved to where they are from somewhere else, cobbling together some kind of idiosyncratic life. Even the kind of minimal connections that Burt and Verona seek elude them.

In the end, there turns out to be a family home, after all – Verona’s sister has never sold the house in which the two of them grew up – and it is a beautiful old farmhouse, too, located on a lake that must have been added in a special-effects room somewhere. The ending of the movie probably has to be what it is, plot-wise, but it is highly improbable.

Few of my students are growing up in the places where either of their parents grew up, and usually their parents grew up in different places. Many of them – at least the wealthier ones – are barely out of the door before their parents sell the family house. (A common story, for instance, is: “Well, my parents only lived in [insert name of town] because of the school district, so now they don’t have to live there anymore.”) For those students, the real-life Burts and Veronas, the loss is preordained and out of their control: Even if they wanted to return to a childhood or ancestral home, there isn’t one to find. 

Of course, that’s not an entirely new phenomenon. I can play that game with my family pretty far into the past: I didn’t grow up where either of my parents grew up. Neither of them grew up where their parents had grown up. None of my grandparents grew up where any of their parents – my great-grandparents – had grown up. I’m pretty sure the same holds true even farther back.

Often, I wonder how much of what people call America’s “cosmopolitan elite” is cosmopolitan – or at least detached from place – as a matter of choice.

Having a home is a hard thing in America, more a matter of work and effort and luck than a matter of inheritance or history.

On Saturday, Claremont had its annual Fourth of July extravaganza. The day included a 5K race, a fair, parties, fireworks, a parade (in which, I should tell you, my husband and I marched on behalf of the threatened Bernard Field Station). Before we went to bed, I asked him what his favorite part of the day had been.

He didn’t hesitate: “Starting to feel like a part of this place.”

    A sad tale you’ve told and me with one in San Antonio with three grandbabies and the youngest in Colorado Springs with three grandbabies.
    Truth is, I’d go “back,” in an instant. Damn the air conditioning, T.V, automobile…all of it.

    So very true, although if you have an inheritance and a history to start with, you at least might know where and what home is and the longing for it might draw you back.

    My wife’s family is clustered in south-central PA and traces its roots there back through many generations. Although Mrs. Pilgrim grew up in Upland, CA—her father was one of 17 children, so the joke goes that there just wasn’t room for them all in PA—she has never really felt at home there. Her parents always impressed upon her, for the most part unintentionally, that home was back East. It is no accident that all their children live in Pennsylvania, and that after 40+ years in the same house in Upland, my in-laws are considering a move back themselves.

    In similar fashion, I grew up in the same house my father grew up in and in the same community as his father and his father before him, and so on unto the 9th generation. Though I have put down roots in the opposite end of the state, what I call home is southern Lancaster County, and I suspect it will always be that for me.

    For both of us, home has a definite and particular meaning, a meaning given as a matter of inheritance and history. It takes a fair amount of effort to maintain those things and pass them on to the next generation, but knowing what we are shooting for makes it a lot easier.

    What do you base this comment on? I don’t think this is abnormal at all. I didn’t grow up where my parents grew up, and they didn’t grow up where their parents grew up. Only one set of my grandparents did grow up where their parents grew up, but they quickly left as soon as they graduated highschool. I think situations like this are largely the norm. Granted, I have no more proof than you do, but I know very few people who deviate much from this pattern.

    Second, I was so absorbed with the attempt to relive my cross-country road trip vicariously through the movie, and distracted by all the depressingly/hilariously dysfunctional families, that the theme of placelessness that the movie is really about was almost pushed to the background. Thanks for reminding me — that does make it more poignant and the movie has a little more substance and significance for me now. (Although I guess I’m an outlier in terms of the family pattern, as my Grandma grew up in San Francisco and moved across the water to the East Bay, where my Mom and Dad now live, where I now live when I come home for the summer, and where I hope to return eventually, house prices willing.)

    Third, how did you like the portrayal of college professors in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s character, with her crazy comments about the practices of the “seahorse community”? So funny.

  6. When I looked into it, one branch of my family tree seemed especially loaded with preachers, missionaries, and doctors, and I think they had good reasons for moving to different places. They stayed true to a broad geographic region, but not to any one town. And the Presbyterian Church provided some measure of continuity. Furthermore, they kept telling their stories, and maybe that’s the best a person like me could hope for.
