Illich was a critic of liberation theology, indeed. And his criticism of the institutionalized church was not quite the squawking rail against the man that often passes for critique. He thought institutionalization of all sorts of things, while perhaps inevitable in a world broken by sin, was something to be resisted… So hardly liberal in any conventional sense…

The ideas of Base Communities in Liberation Theology and the sort of non-hierarchical learning networks are very similar. Illich was a fierce critic of the institutionalized church and thought it had perverted and undermined the gospel message.
