I don’t look to any of the MSM for enlightenment, but you can find curious cultural touchstones from Time to time, the former of which has released its list of nominees for “Person of the Year.” The nominees are:
- Julian Assange
- Glenn Beck
- David Cameron
- The Chilean miners
- Arne Duncan
- Recep Tayyip Erdogan
- Jonathan Franzen
- Lady Gaga
- Robert Gates
- Tony Hayward
- Hu Jintao
- LeBron James
- Steve Jobs
- Hamid Karzai
- David and Charles Koch
- Liu Xiaobo
- Barack Obama
- Sarah Palin
- Nancy Pelosi
- Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf
- Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert
- The Unemployed American
- J. Craig Venter
- Elizabeth Warren, Mary Schapiro and Sheila Bair
- Mark Zuckerberg.
I’ll confess to not recognizing a couple of the names, having contempt for more than a few, having one live with me, and not knowing how a single one of these persons has made my life any better. Of course, it’s not about me, but the criterion is the person who has most affected our lives, and embodied what was important about the year. If that’s the case, then we Americans have much to be fearful of. Maybe we’d be better off if we didn’t live in a world that had a person of the year.
As for me, I nominate my daughter Stephanie. Her performance in diving meets have been a source of paternal pride, and she continues to light up every room she enters.
Isn’t Sarah Palin currently also one of The Unemployed American?
