John Fechtel develops tools for building design and construction as a product designer and computer programmer at Generate. He also writes at Nature/Culture and elsewhere about complex systems, nature and culture, the unique and unprecedented conditions of modernity, technology, and bio-ethics. He is a graduate of the University of Florida and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and lives with his wife and two children in Gainesville, FL.
We have wrought a strange and fantastically complicated world for ourselves. But we can know how well we are interfacing with it by its fruits: a terrifyingly effective machinery, but spasms of pain in our arms and backs.
