Speaking of Illich

in Short

I neglected to comment on the Illich post when it was timely (funny how the internet compresses time and reduces us all to servants of what Berry called the “absolute industrial present”), but I will forever wear this as a badge of honor.

Huh? I thought Illich was a critic of Liberation Theology.

The ideas of Base Communities in Liberation Theology and the sort of non-hierarchical learning networks are very similar. Illich was a fierce critic of the institutionalized church and thought it had perverted and undermined the gospel message.

Illich was a critic of liberation theology, indeed. And his criticism of the institutionalized church was not quite the squawking rail against the man that often passes for critique. He thought institutionalization of all sorts of things, while perhaps inevitable in a world broken by sin, was something to be resisted… So hardly liberal in any conventional sense…

Nice badge, Caleb. Keep ‘em guessing…
